Online Gambling – The Main Place Where People Gamble

Online Gambling is a multi-billion industry that provides customers with a range of gambling products such as casino games, sports betting, fantasy sports and lottery-type games. Although it is legal in most jurisdictions, there are several risks associated with gambling online. The easy availability of these products and the aggressive promotion in popular and social media increase their uptake and impact on harmful behaviours. Moreover, the proliferation of high-intensity products like EGMs and fast wagering platforms increases the risk of harm and disproportionately disproportionally impacts on vulnerable communities.

In general, the vast majority of articles report that the main place where people gamble online is at home, and this finding is robust across different studies. However, it is interesting to note that one in five online gamblers have reportedly gambled outside the home. In this context of the partial federal government shutdown in 2020, where employees are furloughed and there have been lockdowns on many public venues, it is not surprising that this number has stayed stable.

Most research on the topic of Online Gambling focuses on factors that influence the likelihood to gamble, with the most frequently reported factors being gender (women are more likely than men), age, and income. There is less homogeneity in the literature regarding the other factors studied, with some studies reporting that relational factors (such as having family members who gamble) and life contexts (such as academic stressors) are more likely to be associated with gambling online than others.
